Term 1 2013 Training and Development

1. Title: Get Interactive with the Early Years
Date:
Friday 8th March Suitable for Kindergarten – Year 1 teachers with  interactive SMART boards

Descriptor: This session consists of three parts. The first two sessions will look at creating interactive activities for students with a focus on Maths, Literacy and Science. Participants will view and create their own interactive SMART Notebook resources. The third session will look at free interactive resources for students. If you have an iPad bring it along and explore interactive apps for the Early Years. If you don’t have an iPad, don’t worry. There will be a wealth of free interactive online resources for you to explore.

2. Title: Teaching Digital Citizenship (online research, referencing and blogging)
Date :
Friday 15th March 2013 Suitable for Year 3-7 teachers (nothing to do with SMART boards)

Descriptor: Digital citizenship is the norms of appropriate, responsible technology use. With the growth of Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) and 1:1 initiatives in schools there is a need to talk about responsible use of technology. Throughout this session participants will explore ways of teaching effective online research, referencing and blogging etiquette. The term blog is short for web log, a “log” of diary-like entries published on a web site. Blogging is easy, almost instant, publishing of content to a website. Never blogged before? Never mind.

I will help all participants create their own free website with online resources for students on how to research effectively on the Internet, how to and why they should reference their resources and of course, pages for students to ‘blog’ in order to learn collaboratively online. Participants are invited to bring a research assignment which they currently use with their students (ie an author or artist study, a science or SOSE assignment) or one which they intend to use (only needs to be in Word format). Participants will leave with their own website to use with their students.

Cost: $150 per person per day (includes morning tea/lunch) Location: Athelstone, South Australia
To Register and arrange payment contact Jo Villis
via email at jvillis@inter-tech.com.au .All participants will receive a training and development certificate to acknowledge their hours of training.

January 2013 School Holiday Training and Development

Inter-tech Education are offering 2 new sessions during the January 2013 school holidays. Please note: New sessions and new location!

Professional Development Title 1: How to create your own website with user friendly tools!
BeFunky_presenting.jpgDate: 18th January 2013, 9:00-3:30
Descriptor: Throughout this day you will learn how to create your own website using a free educational web platform. Basic computing skills are essential, however prior knowledge of website creation is not expected. Why would you want to create your own website? For many reasons, here are a few; (1) Your website can function as a class bog (information for parents/students); (2) Your website can store your teaching program online for student access 24/7 or to flip your classroom ;(3)To create digital portfolios for your students; (4)To be able to teach your students how to create a website for assignments. Here are a few examples:
An 11 year olds’ SOSE assignment
My Spelling Program
My Class Blog (work in progress)

Professional Development Title 2: Go back to Interactivity, with SMART Notebook software
Date: 21st January 2013, 9:00-3:30
Descriptor: Are you using your SMARTboard like a data projector? Looking for more interactivity? With the recent rate of production of new computer technologies and the filtration and integration of computer technologies has been phenomenal. However, this rapid pace of educational technology often causes confusion about what we should be doing as teachers. Sometimes we try to take on too much, which often results in teachers using technology mainly to give lessons a fresh look, often the interactive pedagogy is pushed aside especially when using our SMARTboards. This session will explore basic SMART Notebook 11 tools in order to bring interactivity back into your lessons. The same tools can be applied across most curriculum areas and year levels.

Cost: $150 per person per day (includes morning tea/lunch)
Location: Athelstone, South Australia
To Register and arrange payment contact Jo Villis via email at jvillis@inter-tech.com.au .All participants will receive a training and development certificate to acknowledge their hours of training.

 Past Conferences:

April 2012 Teacher2Teacher Conference

I recently presented at the Teacher2Teacher Technology Conference in Bow Island, Canada which was organised by Dave Blemings.

I joined a range of presenters from different countries who all had different technology backgrounds. I would like to share some resources from the conference with you:

Presenter: Allen (Al) Wolmer
Field/Subject: Secondary Math (Algebra and Calculus)

Al is a Secondary Mathematics teacher at Yesheva Atlanta High School. Al has written an article called, ‘External Software into SMART board Calculus Lessons’ which he would like to share with you. This article describes how teachers can use SMART Notebook software to create dynamic, visual and effective calculus lessons. You can also view a SBRGVUG Meeting Recording online  during which  Al demonstrates the use of the screen shade, tables and cell shade, and fade out animation reveals with links to calculus.

Presenter: Jen Deyenberg
Field/Subject: Jen is now the Project Coordinator for School Technology, Alberta, Canada. Prior to her current position, Jen was a Junior Primary Teacher.

Jen Presented a range of sessions. During one of her sessions she demonstrated how students can use a GPS to create their own Geocaches. Here is a video link, it is a great concept! Below are links to some of  Jen’s Prezi Presentations that I found online:
An Elementary Classroom in the 21st Century
Game Based Learning

Presenter: Richard Byrne
Field/Subject: Free Technologies For Teachers

Richard presented a range of sessions focussing on the WEB, video creation tools and Google applications. The best place to find resources and information by Richard is to visit his blog at Free Technologies for Teachers.

Presenter: Me (taking a bite of the World’s largest Pinto Bean)

Sept 2011 IWBNet Solutions Conference Sydney
The 2 day conference was a success with many SMARTboard sessions presented for teachers. Sessions were modified throughout the day to tailor to teachers needs. It was evident that most schools already had IWBs and interactive SMART schools were looking to upgrade/or purchase more SMARTboards and view the possibilities of the SMART Student Response Systems (clickers). The SMART board pictured below was used on the stand, it is an old SB400 series and was used for software discussions with particular interest in the SMART Maths Tools, an add on feature.

Please note that SMART have new dual touch interactive boards which are available. They have similar functionalities of the boards which were on display throughout the foyer, unfortunately I couldn’t show you one. Thank you to SMART in the UK for providing SMART product fliers, SMART pens and SMART bags to hand out to teachers. They were appreciated.
